Blacksmithing at Jerusalem Mill Village
The restored blacksmith shop has live demonstrations on Sundays from 1:00 - 4 p.m. The Village blacksmiths demonstrate traditional techniques for making everyday items such as lantern holders, letter openers, etc. as well as toys. Young visitors may be given the opportunity to help by taking a few swings at the red-hot metal from the coal-fired forge.
The blacksmith heats iron in the forge. A hand operated bellows supplies the air to provide the heat necessary to work iron. Items made by the blacksmiths are on display in the blacksmith shop and for sale in the gift shop.
The blacksmith uses a hammer and anvil to shape red hot iron into useful objects. |
